In , a 5 part mini-series titled Silver Surfer: Black was released featuring art from Tradd Moore in collaboration with writing from Donny Cates. The series is an extension of a Guardians of the Galaxy storyline which the Surfer was sucked into a black hole and ejected into unfamiliar space territory. This run follows the Surfer as he traverses the spaceways on a journey back home.
Facing the destruction of his world by planet-consuming Galactus , Radd bargains with the cosmic being. In return for the safety of Zenn-La and his lover, Shalla-Bal , Radd pledges to seek out planets for the world devourer to consume as his herald. Galactus imbues him with a portion of the Power Cosmic , transforming him into the Silver Surfer. Radd serves Galactus for an unspecified amount of time. Eventually, the Surfer summons his master to Earth.
Touched by their nobility, he rebels against Galactus, who is eventually driven off. Before he leaves, he confines the Surfer to Earth with an invisible barrier that affects only him. During his exile, the Surfer fights numerous villains, including Doctor Doom , who wants his Power Cosmic, and Mephisto , who wants his soul.
The Surfer’s only ally during these trials is a physicist by the name of Al B. Harper, who eventually sacrifices himself to save the world from the Stranger. Banding together with the Hulk and Namor during these wanderings, the Surfer forms the “Titans Three”, a group dedicated to battling evil on Earth. The Surfer finally pierces Galactus’s barrier with the aid of Reed Richards and temporarily escapes Earth. He discovers, though, that his homeworld has been ravaged by Galactus and Shalla-Bal has been abducted by Mephisto and taken to Earth.
Even though it means trapping himself once more, the Surfer returns to Earth to battle and defeat Mephisto. Before being vanquished, Mephisto sends Shalla-Bal back to Zenn-La, but the Surfer manages to endow her with a portion of his Power Cosmic, which she uses to revitalize the plant life of their ravaged homeworld. After the Surfer aids the Fantastic Four against Galactus’s latest herald Terrax , The Surfer eventually pierces Galactus’s barrier by acting on a suggestion of trying to pass through on a spaceship instead of via his own power on his surfboard.
He also makes peace with Galactus by rescuing current herald Nova from the Skrulls. Galactus declares the Surfer’s exile ended.
Embroiled in fresh hostilities between the interstellar Kree and Skrull empires, the Surfer also intervenes in a series of plots by the Elders of the Universe , who plan to become supremely powerful by destroying Galactus and the universe with him.
The Surfer thwarts this plot with the aid of his new love interest, Mantis , the Earth-born cosmic heroine also known as the “Celestial Madonna”. The Surfer repeatedly battles space-born menaces, the chief of whom is Thanos, who attempts to kill half the life in the universe using the omnipotent Infinity Gauntlet.
He convinces Galactus to restore it, but once Galactus has done so, the Surfer is overcome with grief until he is able to forgive himself. The Surfer returns home to Zenn-La to find that the planet has vanished, and learns it was actually destroyed in the s Earth time by the entity known as the Other. Zenn-La and its people which the Surfer repeatedly encountered since leaving Galactus’s service were actually reproductions, created by Galactus so that the Surfer would have a home to return to.
He later regains his personality during a time-travel adventure and sharing a romance with Alicia Masters. Silver Surfer temporarily bonds with and is controlled by the Carnage symbiote , which is seeking revenge for the destruction of its homeworld. Later, the Surfer works with the alien Annunaki race to gather and protect some of Earth’s most extraordinarily gifted children.
During his travels, the Surfer is captured by a portal of the Sakaar Empire. Left weakened and vulnerable by his trip through the portal, the Surfer is subdued and implanted with an obedience disk to ensure he remains loyal to them.
Fighting as a gladiator and believed to be the fabled ‘Sakaarson’ due to his appearance , the Surfer is finally forced to face the Hulk along with his Warbound. Through teamwork and distraction, the Hulk is eventually able to destroy the Surfer’s obedience disk. The Hulk and several other slaves and gladiators are freed when the Surfer uses the Power Cosmic to remove their own obedience disks and give them a way out of the arena, although the Hulk declines the Surfer’s offer to take him back to Earth.
During the Annihilation war, the Silver Surfer again becomes Galactus’s herald to help save the universe from the despot Annihilus.
Drax the Destroyer frees the Surfer, who in turn frees Galactus. An enraged Galactus destroys more than half the Annihilation Wave, and Annihilus is defeated. The Silver Surfer leads the world devourer to the populated planet Orbucen, which brings him into conflict with Richard Rider. He delays the planetary destruction to give the inhabitants more time to evacuate. The Silver Surfer returns to Sakaar in a plan to feed Galactus with the unique “Old Power” which he claims would sate his master’s hunger for thousands of years, sparing many other inhabited worlds.
He is opposed by the Hulk’s son, Skaar , and is enslaved by an obedience disc. The conflict is ended when Skaar’s mother Caiera sacrifices her soul and Old Power as sustenance for Galactus.
The battle ended when the Silver Surfer chose to leave his post as herald and guard an Asgardian artifact. Galactus “tethers” him to Asgard’s location in Oklahoma , resulting in his powers waning the further he travels from Asgard, and grants him the ability to return to human form.
Silver Surfer and Dawn meet Glorian the Maker of Miracles, who plans to rebuild our universe for the heroes to return to after they finish in Battleworld. Glorian has also enlisted the help of the Shaper of Worlds. Dawn agreed to use her memories to restore Earth while Silver Surfer left to restore the rest of the universe, but Silver Surfer unmade Galactus while Dawn unknowingly created another version of Norrin. The Shaper of Worlds is not happy with the changes.
When Silver Surfer was displaced in time, he had an encounter with Knull. Gathering the energy from the cosmos, Silver Surfer managed to defeat Knull. During the ” King in Black ” storyline, Silver Surfer passes by the planets that were ravaged by Knull. Knull reels in pain and Eddie Brock is chosen to be the new Captain Universe. Through the God of Light, Silver Surfer assumes a chrome form and turns his surfboard into a sword while Knull transforms his armor into one that would enable him to combat Silver Surfer.
Just then, Venom appears having been transformed into Captain Universe stating that he will handle Knull for them. With their weapons separated from the battle axe form following Knull’s death, Thor and Silver Surfer noted that things will not be back to normal soon. The Silver Surfer wields the Power Cosmic , granting him superhuman strength, endurance, and senses and the ability to absorb and manipulate the universe’s ambient energy.
The Surfer can navigate through interstellar space and hyperspace, which he can enter after exceeding the speed of light allowing traversing interstellar and intergalactic distances to other galaxies millions and even billions of light years away.
The Surfer sustains himself by converting matter into energy; he does not require food, water, air, or sleep, but occasionally enters a sleep-like meditation to dream. He can survive in nearly any known natural environment, including deep space, hyperspace, black holes and stars. His senses enable him to detect objects and concentrations of energy light years away and to perceive matter and energy in subatomic detail, including life energies of living beings.
The Surfer’s board is composed of a nearly impervious, cosmically powered silvery material similar to his own skin. The board is mentally linked to the Surfer and moves in response to his mental commands even when he is not in physical contact with it. When Galactus exiled the Surfer to Earth, his means of imprisonment was linked to the board. When the Surfer and the Fantastic Four realized this, the Surfer put it to the test by leaving the board planet-side and entering space in the Four’s spacecraft.
Once he was free of Earth, the Surfer remotely converted the board to energy, recalled it to him, and reformed it in space. The Surfer has displayed the ability to shed his silver skin and revert to his original appearance as Norrin Radd, masking the Power Cosmic and allowing him to be more inconspicuous when needed. In this state, he can properly eat, drink and sleep. Warren Ellis ‘s Ultimate Galactus Trilogy originally suggested that the Ultimates ‘ ally the Vision was the herald of Galactus, a robotic probe that travels through space warning civilizations of the impending arrival of Gah Lak Tus.
In the final miniseries of the trilogy, Ultimate Extinction , silvery humanoids began to appear, sent to trigger mass suicides in order to reduce the population’s resistance. Suicide cults founded by the creatures began to appear all across the globe as Gah Lak Tus drew near.
These silvery beings had the ability to grow wings; morph into an ovoid ; form spikes; or take an intermediary form, gliding on an oval surface. They also demonstrated the ability to manipulate large quantities of energy. He is teleported to Earth after Reed mistakes him for a star that he is trying to harness.
His appearance triggers planet-wide chaos and natural calamities. In 43, Reed comments that Gah Lak Tus seems to have modeled its drones on this surfer, and he gives his name as Norin Radd. The Searcher states that he will summon his “master”, who will make the population of the Earth happier than they have ever been. It is revealed that the Surfer has been exiled from Zenn-La for destroying the control that Psycho-Man had over Zenn-La, but because of finding Earth for his master to “save” he may return.
After Psycho-Man gains domain over Earth, the Silver Surfer, temporarily imprisoned in his own ‘memorial’ statue, rescues Mr. Fantastic, tells him his story, and asks him to save Earth.
With the Surfers beaten and the insane Psycho-Man reprogrammed to experience the unthinking happiness he had imposed on others, Silver Surfer wanders the space ways. He informs Phoenix that the Watchers disapprove of the problems her flight across the universe is causing and briefly battles her before asking what she is looking for.
On Earth , Norrin Radd had been a great military scientist who accidentally destroyed his own world with his greatest invention. Determined to bring it back to existence, he approached Galactus , Restorer of Worlds, and became his herald in the hope that Galactus would resurrect his world in exchange for his service. Xavier tells Aria he loves her, but she is disgusted by him. This puts her at risk of hurting her mother again and further damaging their newly repaired relationship.
Aria moves in with Meredith and Byron to avoid Xavier as his true intentions will jeopardize Aria and Ella’s relationship. After a shock at her gran’s will reading and her family neglecting her, Spencer comes to believe that she is adopted and starts searching a reuniting website for answers. She soon starts dating her class rival Andrew after he helps her find her supposed mother. Ian visits her and insists he is innocent to Spencer’s disbelief, he later visits her again after breaking out of jail.
A tells Spencer not to tell Wilden about these visits. In the end, Spencer, Emily, Aria, and Hanna find Ian’s body in the woods behind Spencer’s house, but when they return with the police, the body is missing.
Spencer meets a woman named Olivia Caldwell who she thinks is her real mother, and attempts to move to New York, but it turns out to be a scam and she loses her college money. Kate has feelings for Mike Montgomery, who was Hanna’s first kiss, and she becomes obsessed with stealing Mike from her, despite hating Mike now. The two ask Mike out on dates and he goes out to them until Hanna embarrasses him.
Hanna tells Mike they must be exclusive and he agrees, but tells her that she must take him to prom. Kate reveals to Hanna that she doesn’t like Mike and pretended to in order to get Hanna to date him, as she knew they didn’t like each other.
The two get into a public argument which Mike overhears and runs off, leading Hanna to realise she does like Mike. Noel Kahn helps the two reconcile and they become an official couple. Hanna discovers messages between Wilden and Jason and remembers the two were very close when younger, with Wilden picking up Jason after a particularly loud argument with Alison which Hanna overheard – glass had been smashed.
Aria meets Jason DiLaurentis, her former crush, at a bus stop and the two flirt but Jason suddenly freaks out and abandons her. They later go out to a bar together and kiss. Aria invites Jason to a party at Radley, a children’s mental hospital turned hotel, but he accuses her of playing a cruel prank on him and runs away.
Later, she receives an email from Jason telling her to meet him at his house, but when she arrives there is no answer and she gets chased by a savage rottweiler through the window. Jason discovers her and accuses her of stalking before kicking her out. Aria sees someone running away into the woods with the rottweiler. When Emily tells Isaac he refuses to believe her and is rude, however later apologises after discovering the truth, Emily breaks up with him despite this. Throughout this, Emily has constant run-ins with an erratic Jason who almost runs her over and she receives many instructive texts from A who sends her pictures and questions to figure out Alison’s murder.
At the opening party for Radley, a former so-called “haven for troubled youth”, Emily finds proof that Jason DiLaurentis had been a patient there, and soon Hanna, Aria, and Emily all come to believe that Jason and Darren Wilden had something to do with Ali’s murder.
Ian Thomas confirms their suspicions through email about Darren and Jason right before someone sets the woods behind Spencer’s house to fire. Although at first they had their doubts about Ian being alive, they are now confident he is. While Aria is trying to get to Spencer’s barn to show them Ali’s flag from 6th grade, she finds someone caught in the woods because of the fire, saves this person, and then they all recognize her as Ali. She learns that Lucy’s sister, Leah, went missing several years prior after threatening to run away with her boyfriend although everyone – except Lucy – believes her boyfriend murdered her.
Emily discovers Wilden was Leah’s boyfriend and believes she is the body in the grave not Alison’s, and A instructs her to break into Rosewood’s police precinct for evidence but she is caught and arrested. Aria begins a relationship with Noel Kahn, after he defends her at a party.
Noel, who believes in psychics, convinces her to go to mediums with him one of which produces a message in Ali’s handwriting that states that “Ali killed Ali”. This leads her to believe that Ali might have committed suicide. Whilst on a date, the police burst in and arrest her. Hanna’s father sends her to a clinic to prevent her eating disorder from reappearing due to stress, where she befriends a controlling girl named Iris.
Iris is obsessed with her previous roommate, Courtney, and insists Hanna be ‘normal’ leading Hanna to lie about being a ‘Pretty Little Liar’. A leaves a newspaper revealing the truth, and Iris reveals Hanna is in a clinic to the press causing rumours that she is clinically insane. Hanna has more dreams about Ali, which causes her to suspect that Iris had something to do with Ali’s death, especially when Iris shows knowledge about Ali even Hanna didn’t know.
Iris threatens Hanna, causing her to break down in front of everyone before she is arrested by the police. A sends more messages, leading Spencer to believe her mother had uncovered the affair on the night of Alison’s murder and killed her. At a surprise celebration, Spencer confronts her father only to discover her mother and Melissa had no idea, Mrs Hastings screams at Mr Hastings and demands a divorce. As the night dissolves into chaos the police arrive and Spencer is arrested.
It is revealed the Liars were all arrested for Ali’s murder where they realize that “A” has tricked each of them into believing someone else killed Ali. However, a man named Billy Ford is soon arrested for murdering Alison and an unnamed body.
Scared it is Melissa, Spencer rushes home to discover Jenna Cavanaugh’s body being fished out of their ditch. At the dance, Emily grows upset with Ali after seeing her dance with other people and begins to believe she was manipulating her until Ali meets with Emily in the bathroom and kisses her.
The two start an unofficial relationship. Spencer gets to know Ali and they attempt to connect as sisters, becoming extremely close. Melissa doesn’t trust Ali and attempts to stop Spencer from talking to ‘Courtney’, causing Spencer to slowly believe Melissa knows that she isn’t Courtney. Hanna’s boyfriend, Mike, has items planted in his locker causing a mockery to be made of him in the entire school, when given a choice between Mike and her popularity, Hanna dumps and publicly shames Mike for a chance at re-joining Naomi’s clique.
Ali reveals herself to Hanna and the two plan to embarrass Kate, Naomi and Riley using messages they wrote whilst drunk. It works, and Hanna tells Naomi and Riley it was payback for dumping Ali out of their group years prior and causing her to befriend the Liars, but the pair reveal Ali was the one who dumped them.
Ali meets Aria at a spot only they knew about and reveals her identity, but unlike the others Aria becomes overwhelmed by the revelation and leaves. Aria tolerates Ali, but begins to believe she is just waiting to embarrass them as she did before, after Ali invites her and the other girls around to prepare for the dance, Aria remembers all of the awful things Ali had done before her disappearance and refuses.
At the dance, she hears rumours that Ali and Noel got together and Ali suddenly slaps Noel and accuses him of kissing her, an upset Aria breaks up with him. After the dance, Ali invites the others around to her house and they all accept. On the way there, Spencer gets a frantic call from her mother telling her that Melissa has disappeared. Spencer had begun to believe that her sister was the one who killed Ali and that she may be after the rest of them, but once they arrive at the house it’s revealed that Ali is the killer.
They discover that the girl they were friends with years ago was actually Courtney, and the real Ali was stuck in an institution. She had killed Courtney for ruining her life, attempted to kill the girls in the forest fire, tried to have them arrested, and is now going to kill them by setting the house on fire.
They’re able to escape after stumbling onto Ian’s body hidden in a closet and releasing a bound Melissa, who Ali had kidnapped and was planning to kill as well. Emily is separated from the others in the chaos and is found by Alison, the two engage in a fist fight which Emily wins.
Ali is trapped inside the house and it’s assumed she died in the fire, although her body is never found. After learning that her ex-husband shipped Hanna off to a mental institution, Ashley Marin transfers back to Rosewood and kicks Hanna’s father, Isabel and Kate out of the house, thrilling Hanna.
Hanna and Mike get back together. Meredith goes into labour, giving birth to a girl named Lola. Aria and Noel get back together after it is revealed that Ali kissed him, not the other way around, and Ella breaks up with Xavier after learning of his inappropriate behaviour towards Aria.
Spencer’s father proclaims that even though he and her mother may not get back together, things are going to change for the better in their family, and Spencer and Melissa grow closer after almost being killed.
Spencer and Andrew’s relationship also strengthens after Ali’s attempt to break them up failed. Emily buries everything she can find that reminds her of Ali at Courtney’s grave, hoping she can finally find closure, but is unsure of whether the noises she hears at the cemetery are real or imagined. And somewhere, a new girl starts her senior year at an anonymous school, a girl whose name just so happens to be an anagram of Alison DiLaurentis.
The reader is left wondering if Alison is alive. In the meantime, Noel, Aria’s boyfriend, has an exchange student, from Finland, come to live with him. Instead of being the nerdy boy, Klaudius, that Noel expected, the exchange student turns out to be a gorgeous blonde, Klaudia, who tries to steal Noel from Aria. Aria ends up accidentally pushing Klaudia off of a ski lift as an act of self-defense; however, Klaudia uses that information against Aria.
By that point, Aria and Noel’s relationship is shaky and uncertain. Emily meets a new girl, Chloe, who moves into the Cavanaugh’s old house.
They immediately become good friends, bonding over Chloe’s baby sister, Grace. Emily has now given up hope of getting a swim scholarship, her only option for college.
Chloe’s dad offers to help but also hits on Emily, even making sexual moves towards her. Chloe walks in on her dad kissing Emily, but thinks that it’s Emily who is wrecking her family her father had previously been cheating. Hanna’s dad runs for senator of Pennsylvania. Hanna steals money from her dad and frames Jeremiah, a mean man who is also working on set.
Spencer’s mom has begun to date Nicholas Pennythistle, the father of snobby Amelia and her brother Zach, in whom Spencer develops a romantic interest. When they go out dancing, she kisses him, only to find out Zach is gay. When the Hastings and Pennythistles travel to New York together, Spencer and Zach drunkenly fall asleep in the same bed. During the night, Spencer had kicked off her clothes because she was hot, leaving her in her blouse and underwear. The next morning Mr. Pennythistle wakes them both up by entering the room.
Their indecent clothing and close proximity leads Mr. Pennythistle to believe that they had slept together and acts violent. Spencer tells him that Zach didn’t touch her and that he’s gay, hoping to help, but Mr. Pennythistle becomes furious and sends Zach to military school. Zach and Spencer’s friendship ends, Zach leaving Spencer with the words “Rot in hell, bitch”. The girls start to get messages from a new “A”, and believe it’s Ali and that she somehow survived the fall from the building.
In the end of the book, the news turns on and a teenage girl’s dead body was found floating in the water in Jamaica. They identify this girl as Tabitha Clark from New Jersey. The cops believe her death was a tragic accident – not a murder. The girls realize they killed an innocent girl. Emily accidentally meets Kelsey at a party and is instantly smitten with her. She and Kelsey grow close, much to Spencer’s disapproval. After Emily is hurt by Spencer’s remarks about her love for Alison, she angrily tells Kelsey that Spencer framed her for the drug possession.
Depressed, Kelsey overdoses and attempts to throw herself into the quarry where Mona died, but Emily saves her and Kelsey is sent to the Preserve for treatment. While visiting Kelsey, the girls realize that Tabitha was also a patient at the Preserve and was the same age as Alison and Courtney.
Hanna’s father asks her to help with the social media aspect of his campaigning. She meets a boy named Liam, who she falls for, despite knowing he is the son of her father’s political opponent. They break up when she learns he has been seeing multiple other girls while dating her, and reconciles with Mike. After Aria is dumped by Noel, she seeks out comfort in Ezra, in hopes of rekindling their romance. However, things are strained between them, and Aria eventually goes back into a relationship with Noel, after discovering Ezra and Klaudia being intimate.
The Liars attempt to circumvent “A’s” threats by coming clean about their secrets, with varied success. Meanwhile, “A” becomes more violent, shoving Emily down a hill at Stockbridge trail. Kelsey cannot be A. Emily and Spencer have their biggest rivalry. Spencer visits Princeton hoping to join an Eating Club , but “A” interferes and spikes Spencer’s pot brownies with LSD and Ritalin and a member named Harper is caught with pot, which she attempts to blame on Spencer.
Aria panics when she finds out Noel’s father is a drag queen and ends up putting her relationship with Noel at risk when “A” threatens Aria to expose Noel’s father photo publicly. On a tip from “A”, Hanna begins spying on Mike’s new girlfriend, Colleen. Later she becomes publicly humiliated by “A” when she sends everybody a video of Hanna stalking Colleen, and her desperate ways of getting Mike back.
Gayle is murdered by “A” and it is revealed that she was Tabitha’s stepmother. Tabitha’s father speaks at Gayle’s funeral, and announces that Tabitha’s autopsy showed no trace of alcohol, meaning that she was murdered. He thus plans to re-open the investigation into her death, and threatens the killer that he will find him, both Gayle’s and Tabitha’s killer.
The girls get very nervous about this. After an explosion on the boat, the Liars go off on their own to bury “evidence” of their connection to Tabitha Tabitha’s locket, which “A” had planted for Noel to find. The near-death experience pushes the girls into wanting to confess about killing Tabitha. However, as they make plans to come clean about everything, they discover that they were not responsible for Tabitha’s death at all: She had been bludgeoned to death by “A”.
The Liars finally come to believe that “A” is, in fact, Alison, as Emily reveals that she may have helped Alison escape the burning Poconos house in Wanted , and now they have to track down her accomplice as well. Emily tries getting information of out of Ali’s old friends, Iris, who we met in ” Heartless. Iris tells Emily little tidbits of Ali, and at Prom Iris recognizes Noel and for sure he was Ali’s secret boyfriend who visited her.
Spencer finds an internet blogger, who blogs about Alison DiLaurentis theories. She meets him and actually ends up liking him, finding his name is Chase. He helps Spencer get information on Alison. Hanna, in an attempt to get information on a burned victim from the last book, Graham, starts volunteering at the Burn Clinic.
There, Graham is still in a coma and right when he’s about to wake up, he dies -all the information is kept hidden for good. Aria, worried and paranoid about what happened last summer, is trying to handle things with Noel being A, even though she doesn’t want to believe it. He says he doesn’t know. While Aria is attempting to get away, Noel pins her to the ground. Spencer, Hanna, and Emily arrive and Noel flees. The morning later, Hanna gets a text from A saying to go to the shed in the Rosewood Day back.
She and the three other girls go, and just in case bring Cops and police and inside is a supposedly unconscious Noel tied up to a chair. It is not revealed if Noel is dead or alive. The girls get a text, signed by A, informing them that they’ve failed to make progress, Noel wasn’t A, and they are back where they started. As a result of telling the police, “A” gave the police a fake security video of the girls beating up Tabitha before she is killed.
The police arrest all of them and told the girls that all of the texts from “A” had come from their phones. The girls are put on bail and go home. Emily’s family seem to hate her and Emily and Carolyn get into a fight. As this happens Emily’s mom has a heart attack. Hanna’s father wants nothing to do with her because it will hurt the campaign. After their hearing they are sentenced to go to trial in Jamaica the next day.
Certain to find “A” they go searching. They find a house by Hanna’s father’s office and go inside. It is small and disgusting. As they are walking in Nick Maxwell comes in pointing a gun at the girls. He is “Helper A” Real Ali’s boyfriend. The girls all know him as someone else.
Spencer knows him as Phineas, a guy at Penn’s summer program who sold her study drugs. Hanna knew him as Jackson, the bartender who kept on giving Madison drinks and refusing to get a cab, resulting in Hanna getting in a wreck with Madison. Emily knew him as Derrick, a friend she had at her job, telling him all of her secrets.
Apr 22, Drcong O ‘ rated it really liked it Shelves: young-adult , fantasy , shawty-so-bad , v-emotionally-moving , im-all-kinds-of-shook , dark. I usually end up hating on the most hyped books loved by all my friends. This book is dark and gripping book full of magic. I loved it and I wanted to give this 5 stars, I really wanted to, but the beginning took some time getting into and it was very dull and boring. The beginning of this book felt like I was reading a textbook.
The writing was bland and there was lots of info dump towards the beginning. Later on, I did grasp the idea of the different Londons and magic.
This book has such a fantastic world building and once the info dump was over, I understood it all. Anyways, the book did get better, a lot better when Lila Bard made an appearance. I loved it. This book is literally almost perfection from multiple Londons, complex sexy coats yes I have issues , badassery, badass female leads, RHY my new husband, guys , KELL, magic, and evil.
Another thing that made this book much much more enjoyable for me was turning innocent quotes into dirty quotes. I want to adopt Kell as my new son and go cut some bitches with Lila Bard.
Oh, I would particulary like to cut that Holland bitch right in the face, that would be great! Jan 27, Anne rated it liked it Shelves: read-in , magic-stuff , adventure-like-stuff , paranormal. It was good , just not for me great. Kinda dry maybe? Or I just didn’t totally connect with the characters? Not sure.
And I seriously mean that! There’s something cool about this setting and these characters that 3. There’s something cool about this setting and these characters that makes me want to see what’s going to happen next. I kind of feel like maybe the first book was just a set-up, and now that the world-building is done, this series trilogy? Because that happens, right? Book one is sorta dry and crunchy, and then book two rocks!
I’m feeling confident about that prediction for some reason. I loved Vicious , I loved the world that she created in this one My point is that I can see why so many of my friends loved this, and I don’t want anyone to mistake a 3. I don’t understand why anyone would think that to start with, but Londons , to be exact. There are 4 different alternate worlds out there, and the only thing they have in common is that London is a city in each of them.
It’s filled with desperate people willing to do bad shit for power. The point? Magic is real! It’s sweet without being romantic And that’s a real selling point for me. I get the appeal, but it just makes me scoff at this point in my life. When I read about a couple who seem to fly into each other’s arms in a fit of passion, all while declaring their undying love for each other? Instead of oohing and cooing like a normal person This is what I see!
Ok, besides a non-awkward romance, this has a few other cool things going for it, as well. Kell’s part of a magical Royal Family. Well, sorta , but not really. Is there more to her than meets the eye? I think Schwab did a good job describing the different Londons because all of them felt very real and well thought out. But I’ve always had a thing for alternate versions of our world stacked on top of each other, so this was right up my ally, to begin with!
And how cool would it be to have the ability to slide in and out of each of those?! Ok, so even if it didn’t really satisfy me as much as I had hoped, I’m all in for the next book! Sep 03, Robin Hobb rated it really liked it. I recently met V. Schwab and found her entertaining and charming.
So I acquired one of her books! I don’t think my review of this work is affected by knowing the author, but I like to be transparent. I always like to avoid spoilers, but in this case, I think the book jacket gives away a bit of the setting, so I’ll share it here as well.
Imagine four Londons, existing simultaneously but separately. Each has a differing amount of magic, with black London a loss, and Red London a place where magic I recently met V. Each has a differing amount of magic, with black London a loss, and Red London a place where magic is like an extra sensory level.
Kell is our protagonist, a young man with the very rare ability to travel among the London’s. Indeed, that is one of his duties, for the royalty of each London are aware of one another and wish to stay in touch. Kell is a de facto member of the royal family of Red London, treated as a son and brother, but also as a value possession. The one thing that is forbidden to Kell is to bring artifacts or souvenirs from one London to another.
And of course, that is the pivot point of the story. And it should be enough to intrigue you into sampling it. The tale is told from multiple points of view. I liked how the characters were introduced as well as how the Londons were shown.
No time is wasted in pulling the reader into the story, and once the action begins, it is relentless. I was pleased to see how advanced magic mimics technology in Red London, for I feel that this is an aspect that is often neglected in stories of worlds where magic exists and is exploited as commonplace. I also felt that the way Kell is exploited by his adoptive and loving family has deep roots in human nature.
Given the ruthless nature of Kell’s antagonists, the story does not flinch from some very dark violence. All good points in my estimation. Quibbles: This book is part of a longer series. As I drew toward the close and realized that not all the conflicts could be resolved in the remaining number of pages, I wished that I had known that from the start. At one point in the story, the characters have a sanctuary and an ally that I wished had been introduced sooner. But both of these quibbles are based on my personal preference and may not impact your reading enjoyment at all!
And given the teaser chapter in the back of this book, it looks as if A Gathering of Shadows may focus more on one of the characters I especially enjoyed. All in all, a solidly constructed fantasy with fully realized characters and a unique setting!

I say finally because it took me a lot to get through – and into- it, and I’m not entirely satisfied with what I read. I’m a huge Victoria Schwab’s fan, she’s both an amazing author and a really kind person that I’d spend days worshiping.
Vicious is one of my favorite books of all time and her writing is very original. Yet this book I can’t tell you if I loved it or not, if maybe I should try and reread it in another moment, because maybe I’m too dumb So I can’t tell you if I loved it or not, if maybe I should try and reread it in another moment, because maybe I’m too dumb to get its awesomeness on the first try, or dump it because it’s not my cup of tea.
I don’t know a single thing, and in my mind it’s a solid three. Not here, not there. In the middle. It’s not a bad book -quite the opposite, actually-, and I do get the hype to some extent, but maybe I wished that it suit my reader needs more than it actually does.
The magic system is probably the thing I liked the most, it added that dark atmosphere I always expect in one of VS’s books. I can’t say the same for the characters, unfortunately, because, aside from Rhy – and sometimes Kell, too- I didn’t like any character in particular. I’m looking at you, Lila. You were a pain. The plot is good, I love London and the way its portrayed, but I had trouble following the writing at times. I found some parts a little dull or anticlimactic, and I had to put it down often because I kept getting distracted by other things.
The twists and stabs were absolutely great, though. I can see a lot of her writing in dynamic scenes and I appreciate the author’s talent. Overall, this is a good book, and I’m probably going to continue with the trilogy when I have some time. I just feel like something is missing. View all 19 comments. He was, after all, Antari. I went into this book not knowing much abo Magic was a living thing—that, everyone knew—but to Kell it felt like more, like a friend, like family.
I went into this book not knowing much about the plot except that it involved magic and that everyone seemed to love it. A Darker Shade of Magic has amazingly complex characters among my favorites: Prince Rhy, Lila Bard, and of course Kell they made it impossible to put the book down.
This book was so original and creative. I had to stop everything I was doing and just finish it. E Schwab’s writing is outstanding. I love close families in YA books. Rhy sighed. My closest friend. It seemed to me that underneath all the evil and pain that had gotten into his body, there was still a flicker of humanity. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
I felt extremely relieved when Lila and Kell killed both of the twins. The instant before the metal struck him from behind, Holland had stopped fighting. It was only a second, a fraction of a breath, but it had been enough to give Kell the edge, the opening.
It was relief. I was anticipating the two main characters meeting right from the start- and it did not disappoint. The chemistry between Lila and Kell felt so real.
It took a lot of effort. This review and more can be found on my blog. This had everything I ever need in a fantasy novel. Writing this, I cannot think of even 1 think I disliked. Kell is an Antari someone with magic powers, able to travel between the 4 Londons. Red – his home, Grey – the dull London where magic is nearly all Damn!
Red – his home, Grey – the dull London where magic is nearly all gone and White – where magic is controlled and used to assume power, and once there was a Black London, consumed and destroyed. When Kell becomes tangled up in some dark magic, he takes it upon himself to make it right. Along with Lila Bard – a thief and cut-throat he just can’t seem to shake.
I loved this. I don’t know what else to say. This was my first Schwab book, but it absolutely will not be my last! Roll on book 2! View all 25 comments. May 04, Joey Woolfardis rated it did not like it Shelves: bookshelf , feminine , bloody-cack , ce21 , , septic. Kell is a magician-but a special kind of old-who has the ability through blood magic to cross the dimensions in to the different worlds, each of which has a London. In Grey London-boring, magicless London-Kell runs in to his enemies as well as Lila, a thief, and must dispose of an object that has brought a whole different type of magic to the fore.
The premise of A Kell is a magician-but a special kind of old-who has the ability through blood magic to cross the dimensions in to the different worlds, each of which has a London. The premise of A Darker Shade of Magic is interesting. It is not wholly unique, but it is intriguing and has elements of being something that had extreme potential, but unfortunately the severe lack of plot, the abysmal world-building and the utterly annoying characters really let it down.
The four Londons-and I expect there are more-was the most wonderful thing about this book and, sadly, the only thing. This is a wonderful concept, but it was never explored fully. I acknowledge this book is the first in a series, but we barely scratched the surface of any of these worlds in a page long book. In a page long book I expect there to be many travels and many subplots when put in the hand of a good writer. This book had one plot and one world, it just so happens it was called different worlds.
The writing wasn’t particularly bad though I have no idea why anyone thinks adding extra information within parentheses is a good idea? I was never drawn in, my attention was never wholly held. It was good, it was more competent than a lot of authors out there, but it was nothing special. It was simply adequate. My main gripe would be the world-building or total lack thereof , but similarly and coming a very close second were the characters.
Under-developed, obvious and annoying are only three words to describe them. Kell was the most developed, but even then he was rather obvious at times, though some of his decisions were conveyed well. I cannot bring myself to write about the pathetic character of Lila, who I hope dies horribly at some point in the series. The other characters-though billed at main-were background at best.
We got no sense of any of them, except perhaps Rhy but even then he was under-developed. For a page book, there needs to be more than just a stupid plot about a magic stone. There are no subplots, no subterfuge, no otherness about it. There was nothing at all, except a short story that was stretched out and stuffed full of padding to satisfy a word count. I loved Vicious and it will go down as one of the best things I read in A Darker Shade of Magic was hollow in comparison. It had the beginnings of everything I could ask for but never truly followed through. Kell and Lila were both superficial characters in my opinion. Think about what you can tell me about Kell. He loves his brother. That’s basically all I got a No one is more let down by this rating than I am, trust me. That’s basically all I got and most of that you can get from the back of the book blurb.
After pages with this man, we don’t know anything else about him. What can we say about Lila? Everything that’s ever been said about the “I had a hard knock life” female character.
Briefly scrolling through my friends who rated this? It’s a trope. She had a rough life and won’t take any shit and occasionally you see some pain flicker through her eyes but it’s cool because her jaw is set.
That was literally every other description we got of Lila’s facial expressions. That may be a trope that people love to read about, but I find it especially grating.
This characterization really frustrates me. These characters also tend to not trust anyone but then insert themselves into everything. Like, you may not trust me but sucks for you, I’m inviting myself into your life and grand scheme. It’s so surprising to me that the same author that gave us the complex characters of Vicious also gave us these flat characters.
We don’t know them, their tastes, their motivations, nothing. And that’s the main characters, so we won’t even mention the handful of prop-like background characters.
Okay, so you could say that this story is plot driven rather than character driven, but the plot was dry. Red London is red and smells like flowers and yep, that’s all you get about that. White London is ashy and mean and yep that’s all you get about that. Grey London is boring and magic-less and yep that’s all you get about that. The entire story is Kell accidentally brought home a magic rock and needs to take it back.
I thought that while the ending confrontation was interesting at times, it felt a little too neat. The problem with writing super powerful characters is that you have to eliminate them in ways that won’t feel cheap.
Things felt a little too easily resolved by the end, especially considering that it involved a source of magic. Also, I felt like Kell’s magic was used way, way, way too inconsistently. Half the time I was reading, I was thinking, “ugh It’s never explained if there are any limitations or why the most powerful magic guy in the whole world is constantly like, “aw damn.
I’m trapped, this is the worst. I’m so glad I actually finished this, though, it took me three tries to even make it past 50 pages. Not for me and also not one of those things that I “get. View all 11 comments. I love Rhy I must protect him. On to the next book!

And yet, to use the word “traditional” anywhere book collector italiano free this novel is an injustice because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The characters are weird and colorful. We have book collector italiano free protagonist – Kell – who is strong and badass enough to root for, but also complex and layered enough for us to truly care about and relate to.
Plus, he has a coat that has many sides, which he turns around depending on how he wants to look – insane, unique, wonderful. Schwab’s imagination clearly knows no bounds. We also have a cross-dressing pirate who happens to be a tough, infuriating and lovable female character – Lila. And a promiscuous prince, villains who are blood slaves, evil twin rulers and much more.
And then there’s this bizarre world that just played on every one of my senses. The author asks us to believe in a setting that is incredibly farfetched and yet she breathes life into this world with evocative language and makes the unbelievable something we can picture in our heads. What’s book collector italiano free this about book collector italiano free “twins’ London”?
Well, in this world there are four different versions of Book collector italiano free that only the Antari like Kell can move between. Technically, there are only three these days because Black London fell, consumed by its own misuse of magic.
Everyone, it seems, is out to use magic for their own selfish goals in this book. I mean, it sounds pretty amazing, doesn’t it? But in the end I was unsatisfied. I expected something more and my expectations were not met because I couldn’t connect with the characters. They were superficial and I was detached. I didn’t care about their fates, I didn’t find in them the depth I wanted and the pang of enthusiasm I usually feel when I start a new series.
I was just a silent observer, witnessing their story unfold without finding the spark of magic that would make me an active participant book collector italiano free cheer for them, worry for them and eventually love them. Lila annoyed me a couple of times book collector italiano free her imprudence and her recklessness but there is no doubt she was a badass and strong female lead.
I liked Kell a little more and I waited for the signs that I was falling for him, but they never came. I’m still intrigued about his magic and his past though and I’m curious about the way his relationship with Lila will develop. Simple as that. Schwab had raised her wand, ready to cast the spell that would bewitch me but the words never left her lips. Her plotline was like Red London, vivid and full of possibilities.
Her characters like White London, dangerous yet somehow pale and faded. And me, well, I’m Grey London, magicless in the surface but waiting for the magic I know it exists to ignite.
